Earlier, he owned businesses in the hospitality industry. Before joining in 2012, he led Behjati Capital Group in New Canaan, Connecticut, and served as president of B&B Holdings. USA Today, CBS, NBC News, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Francisco Examiner covered his hospitality ventures. He supported the Wheelchair Foundation, New York City Ballet, and Berkeley's visitors bureau, chamber, and city loan commission. He studied economics and computer science at San Francisco State University. His continuing studies covered union contracts, employment law, human resources, conflict resolution, real estate, and accounting.
